USDOT Number vs. Operating Authority: What Is the Difference?
A USDOT Number and operating authority are not the same thing. The USDOT Number is used by FMCSA to identify and monitor regulated entities and their safety information. Operating authority determines whether certain businesses have federal authority to conduct particular types of interstate transportation for compensation. Whether a company needs one or both depends on its operation. Motor carriers, brokers, and freight forwarders can have different registration requirements. The safest approach is to evaluate the actual business model, vehicle operation, cargo, passengers, and interstate activity before filing. Companies should also remember that obtaining authority is only the beginning. Registration information, insurance, process-agent filings, UCR, driver qualification, drug and alcohol programs, HOS, vehicle maintenance, and other requirements may continue throughout the life of the business.
